Carpets migrate like birds
The repetition of the same as the different We don’t live in an empty space. We live in a space which can flow like running water. In an everyday life with constant flows and repetition of situations where everything is forced to look alike, the changing situation with rugs and carpets of the Greek space, the Mediterranean and wider East, incoming and welcoming in different spaces, aims to create an exploration and new replacements. To explore how this transfer of the landscape into a carpet is made, what symbolisms it carries, how it affects and is inspired by the collective imagination. Also to wonder how the repetition of the same becomes the value of the difference, not for the sake of multiculturalism which dominance invents and exploits but for the sake of difference. A basic component of carpets and rugs is their ability to cover vital needs with material sensitiveness, to express a precious collective community experience and in the procedure of their autoproduction to welcome a deep communication and the interaction of people. Without any occurring violence, carpets travel through all geography, from pre-capitalist years till today, transcend borders and carry the precious body of co-existence. The changing sui genesis in citu installation which is derived from the archetypal structure of the “gikos”* – a familiar construction in houses of Kimolos and other places – is transformed from a simple aggregation of data to a dynamic dispersal on clear positions and aspires to participate with the residents and visitors of the island, in a precious flow of knowledge, memories, representations of experiences and relations. The processed images 32,5X42cm (printing of inzekt on aquarelle paper, floss) function as images which remind the way of a long-term studyon on landscape, the way images always do, the programming of a study, something like the planning of yarns on the wall for personal weaving. Also the Workshop for Shaping for the children of the residents and the visitors, all in all concerns the empirical transfer of the landscape on a rug with the geometry and the repetition of the stylized patterns themselves and above all the joy. The carpets and rugs are out and over the dominant images, away from the disenchanted objects. It is “The Garden of Winter” as M. Foucalt called it in his article “Des espaces autres” (Of Other Spaces), the symbolic reflection and the organization of the world, the heterotopias in the house.
